33. Give and receive feedback without overthinking it
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Feedback is a word that can trigger the overthinker in us, whether we’re the one giving the feedback, or the one receiving it.
Being asked to give feedback can feel like one more cognitive task to add to an already lengthy to-do list.
But what if you could ask yourself a different question?
- Instead of “What’s in it for me?”, try putting yourself in the shoes of the person asking for the feedback, and ask “What’s in it for you?” I guarantee you’ll feel differently.
- Being on the receiving end of feedback, whether positive or negative, can be challenging for the overthinker, the overachiever, the introvert.
- We take negative feedback as if it’s a personal attack on our identity and values, which makes us feel discouraged, but then when the opposite happens and we are praised, we doubt the sincerity of the one giving us positive feedback.
- There’s a better way: to find the magical place beyond right and wrong, to stay neutral and detached, and be comfortable noticing what is happening, without making up a story about it.
